The script is based on the story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, written in 1938. He first published under the pseudonym Don A. Stuart.

Antarctica Winter 1982. As these haunting words cascade across the opening scene, the viewer is left wondering if this chilling netherworld is in fact our own. Seeming like the distant landscape of some lost alien world, the stage is set for a battle against the ultimate in alien terror.
Alone and cutoff from the rest of the world , the lives of the 12 member team at the United States National Science Institute Station 4 are abruptly interrupted by a barrage of gunfire. The serenity of this frozen utopia is dashed by what appears to be a couple of cabin-crazed Norwegians bent on destroying a lone wolf dog. Unfortunately, no answers are found, because the Norwegians accidentally blow up their own helicopter and are shot dead by Garry (Donald Moffat), the station commander. All that is left is the dog who quickly makes friends with Clark (Richard Masur), the animal handler, but things are not what they seem.
Confused by these events, ex-Army helicopter pilot Macready (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Cooper (Richard A. Dysart), decided to head out and check on the camp of their recent visitors. With a storm beginnings to close in, Macready and Cooper find the Norwegian camp devastated by fire and everything apparently dead. They gather some notes, video tapes, and remains to take back with them. As the night temperature begins to fall, an unwelcome guest finally reveals itself, as The Thing and the team begin their struggle for survival.
After another expedition to the Norwegian camp, they determine that the enemy they now fight is not of this world. Having been frozen for 100,000 years in the ice, this shape-shifting alien has the ability to assume the identify of any living thing it comes in contact with and now 12 men stand in it's way. Reading like Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians", paranoia rips through the station as each man begins to question the actions of his comrades. Who is human and who is The Thing?? Macready quickly tries to assume control of this hostile environment and comes up with a test to determine if someone is The Thing, but time is running out on mankind.
An all-time classic mixture of elements from both sci-fi and horror genre. "The Thing" was masterfully directed by John Carpenter and exquisitely brought to life by Rob Bottin and his crack effects team. This is by far my favorite John Carpenter film and a must see for any fan.
Although filmed in 1982 "The Thing" spent a over whopping $1.5 million on the film's effects alone!
Unlike the original film, John Carpenter's "The Thing" doesn't include any females in the cast of the film. The only female presence in the film is the voice of Macready's Chess Playing computer.
The Thing was the first film that Carpenter directed where he did not write the script. The script was written by Bill Lancaster (son of Burt and script writer for "Bad News Bears") and is based closely on the original 1938 story. Unfortunately, Bill died in January 1997 from a heart attack.
An actor with no arms and wearing a latex mask was used in the classic defibrillator scene where Dr. Cooper loses his arms.
Three locations were used in shooting the film. A glacier in Juneau, Alaska served as the background for the shots involving the alien ship. At a location in Stewart, British Columbia, the exterior shots for both the American and Norwegian camps were done. And back at Universal, all the interior shots were done.

"Kurt Russell is the hottest man on this planet!!! Althought I think that he must have somehow been blinded from the "The Thing" itself cause I know any man in his right mind would never marry someone like Goldie Hawn. =P

WHERE THE MOVIE ENDED, YOUR MISSION BEGINS...
Get ready for a new chapter of isolation and paranoia
Overview/Storyline:
After the enigmatic disappearance of an American scientific expedition in the uncharted and frozen wastelands of the Antarctic, a military rescue team is sent in to investigate. Within these inhospitable surroundings the team encounters a strange shape-shifting alien life-form that assumes the appearance of people that it kills.
The game brings fear and suspense to unimaginable levels, with a compelling plot and unique gameplay elements based upon action, evasion, trust and fear. Forget everything you ever learned about obliterating alien species with a simple barrage of violent ammunition - this monster is difficult to see, hard to kill, and seemingly impossible to evade. And when you actually see The Thing, it's often too late
Features:
Taking place shortly after the events seen in the 1982 film - The Thing takes us back to the Antarctic base and familiar locales from the film for a terrifying, new chapter of isolation and paranoia.
New trust/fear interface adds a different dimension to the genre - How you influence non-player characters (NPCs) psychological state determines whether or not these characters will cooperate with you.
Amazing lighting, weather and particle effects complemented by subtle sound cues and scripted events create a new level of suspense and terror.
Puzzle-solving can be accomplished by a multitude of scenarios - there is not just one way to accomplish an objective.
Varied pace of gameplay throughout the game blending action, puzzles, horror and human interaction.
Squad-Based control - You have command of several different military personnel:
The Solider - You will need him to help fight off The Thing or you will be in trouble.
The Engineer - He is in charge of fixing things, turning things on and saving your progress.
The Medic - Sure you can find health packs but when the going gets rough (and you can't keep up with heals) you will need him around.
Running and Shooting - something the other survival horror games have not done. It allows the player to shoot on the run (expect to be chased) something the first set of S/H games did not do.
Great story with a double-cross plot twist.
Great Developer - Computer Artworks. Their first title Evolva was heralded as one of the most groundbreaking titles on the PC. Their background of great AI and biomorphic graphics made them a natural choice to develop The Thing.

Did you know that the game was so gory that Universal removed their name from the game?

"Despite these minor hassles it's hard not to be enthusiastic about this game and it is very easy to lose a lot of time playing it. Many of the developers from Deep Space who worked on Extermination are ex-Capcom programmers, so if you liked the Resident Evil series, you should have a monster of time playing this title. "

"Outwardly, The Thing may seem like a typical survival-horror game. But its gameplay goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of the genre..."
